Area converter guide

What does this calculator help you figure out?

The area converter moves a figure between square feet, square meters, and acres, the three units that dominate property listings, floor plans, and land records. Area scales with the square of length, so the factors are the length factors squared: because 1 foot is exactly 0.3048 m, 1 square foot is exactly 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², and 1 square meter is 10.7639 sq ft. The acre is defined as 43,560 square feet (a chain by a furlong, 66 ft × 660 ft), so it is also exact: 4,046.8564224 m². This tool works in square feet internally and shows all three units for every entry. Use it to read a metric floor plan in square feet, compare a lot size quoted in acres with one quoted in square meters, or check a flooring quote. Hectares, square yards, and square inches are not listed; the units section shows how to enter them.

How is the result calculated?

Area (to) = area (from) × square feet per from-unit ÷ square feet per to-unit. Factors (sq ft): square foot 1, square meter 10.7639104167, acre 43,560. Equivalent: 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² exactly.

Worked example

Worked example with the defaults: 100 square feet to square meters. The base is already square feet, so divide by the square feet in a square meter: 100 ÷ 10.7639104167 = 9.29 m², the displayed figure. Cross-check with the exact squared foot: 100 × 0.09290304 = 9.290304 m². The acre row shows 100 ÷ 43,560 = 0.0023 acres. A 1,000 sq ft apartment is therefore 92.9 m², and a quarter-acre lot is 0.25 × 43,560 = 10,890 sq ft, or 10,890 ÷ 10.7639 = 1,011.71 m².

Units and conversion notes

Enter the area as a decimal in the From unit; a room measured 12 ft × 15 ft is 180 sq ft, so multiply the sides first. For a hectare enter 10,000 sq m (2.471 acres). For square yards multiply by 9 to get square feet; for square inches divide by 144. A square kilometer is 1,000,000 sq m, or 247.1 acres, and a square mile is 640 acres. Results show two decimals, with acres shown to four in the detail row because most lots are a fraction of an acre.

What does the result mean?

Unit conversion is exact when the conversion factor is exact, so the only real uncertainty here is rounding and the precision of your input. Where a unit has more than one definition — US versus imperial measures, or short versus metric tons — the wrong variant produces a plausible-looking but wrong answer. The units note above states which definition this page uses. On this page the figure rests entirely on value, from and to, so start there if the area converter returns something you did not expect.

Common mistakes to avoid

Good to know: converting each side with the length factor and then multiplying is fine, but applying the length factor once to an area is not; 100 sq ft is 9.29 m², not 30.48. Listings sometimes mix gross and net floor area, and some markets quote “square meters” that include balconies or shared corridors, which is a definition problem no converter fixes. The two-decimal display also flattens small acreages, which is why the acre row for 100 sq ft is given to four decimals as 0.0023.

Conversion results use stated mathematical factors and display precision. For regulated, medical, engineering, or contractual work, confirm the required standard and precision.

How it works

The method behind the number.

Convert areas between square feet, square meters, and acres. This tool explains the calculation so you can adjust the assumptions to match your situation.

Area (to) = area (from) × square feet per from-unit ÷ square feet per to-unit. Factors (sq ft): square foot 1, square meter 10.7639104167, acre 43,560. Equivalent: 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² exactly.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

Exactly 43,560 square feet, the area of a rectangle 66 ft by 660 ft. In metric that is 4,046.86 m², or 0.4047 hectares. A quarter-acre lot is 10,890 sq ft, and a half acre is 21,780 sq ft.

How many square feet are in a square meter?

1 square meter is 10.7639 square feet, from 1 ÷ 0.3048². Multiply square meters by 10.76 to estimate square feet, or divide square feet by 10.76 for square meters; a 60 m² flat is 645.83 sq ft.

How many square meters is 1,000 square feet?

92.9 m², from 1,000 × 0.09290304. A 1,500 sq ft house is 139.35 m², and 2,000 sq ft is 185.81 m². For rough head math, divide square feet by 11 and you will land about 3% low.

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is 10,000 m², which is 2.471 acres or 107,639 sq ft. Going the other way, one acre is 0.4047 hectares. Enter 10,000 sq m in the converter to see the acre and square-foot figures.

Why is 1 m² not 3.28 sq ft?

Because area scales with length squared. One meter is 3.2808 ft, so one square meter is 3.2808 × 3.2808 = 10.7639 sq ft. The same logic makes a square yard 9 square feet, not 3.
