How to Calculate Flooring Square Footage and Waste

Measure room area, add a cutting allowance, and convert the result into cartons to order.

Flooring orders need more than the room’s exact square footage. Cuts, damaged pieces, pattern matching, installation direction, and full-carton packaging all affect how much material you should buy.

Find the room area

For a rectangular room, multiply length by width. A 12 ft × 10 ft room has 120 square feet. Split irregular rooms into rectangles and add the areas.

Add a cutting allowance

With a 10% allowance, 120 square feet becomes 132 square feet of planning coverage. Diagonal layouts, patterns, many doorways, and fragile materials may need more.

Round to full cartons

Divide planning coverage by the product’s carton coverage and round up. Keep a labeled spare quantity when future repairs would be difficult after a product is discontinued.

Check the installation direction

A single waste percentage cannot model every layout. Confirm plank direction, transitions, closets, stairs, substrate condition, and manufacturer instructions before ordering.
