What makes 14 notable
- Semiprime. 14 = 2 × 7, a product of exactly two primes. That gives it just four divisors, so it splits into equal groups in only two non-trivial ways.
14 in everyday use
Fourteen days make a fortnight, still the standard pay period in much of the English-speaking world. It is the atomic number of silicon, the element beneath every microchip, and the number of lines in a sonnet. Valentine's Day falls on 14 February and Bastille Day on 14 July. A stone is 14 pounds in British weight. Carbon-14, the carbon isotope with fourteen nucleons, decays slowly enough that archaeologists date organic remains up to about fifty thousand years old by measuring how much remains.
Fourteen is the sum of the first three squares, 1 + 4 + 9, which makes it a square pyramidal number: a stack of one, four, and nine cannonballs. It is also the fourth Catalan number, counting among other things the ways to arrange four pairs of brackets correctly. Fourteen factors as 2 × 7 and has four divisors. In cards the ace counts as 14 when it ranks above the king.

The factor list shows every way 14 splits into equal whole-number groups — 4 divisors in total. The prime factorisation is the compact form of that same information, and the base conversions restate 14 for contexts that do not use decimal.
