Salary to hourly calculator guide
An annual salary becomes an hourly rate once you decide how many hours a year it actually pays for. This calculator divides the salary by hours per week times weeks per year, then also shows weekly pay and a simple monthly equivalent. It is the quickest way to compare a salaried offer with an hourly or contract role, to check whether a promotion that adds hours also adds pay per hour, or to set a freelance rate that matches a previous job. The defaults assume 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours a year, which is the convention most employers and payroll systems use. If your week is 37.5 hours or you take unpaid leave, change those fields, because the hourly figure moves with them. Everything here is gross pay: income tax, social contributions, health insurance, pension deductions, bonuses, overtime, and the value of benefits are all outside the conversion, so two jobs with the same hourly figure can have very different take-home pay.
Annual hours = hours per week × weeks per year. Hourly rate ($/hour) = annual salary ($) ÷ annual hours. Weekly pay = annual salary ÷ weeks per year. Monthly equivalent = annual salary ÷ 12.
Worked example with the default inputs: a salary of $65,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. Annual hours = 40 × 52 = 2,080. Hourly rate = $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 per hour. Weekly pay = $65,000 ÷ 52 = $1,250.00, and the monthly equivalent = $65,000 ÷ 12 = $5,416.67. Cut the week to 37.5 hours and the rate rises to $65,000 ÷ 1,950 = $33.33, because the same salary now buys fewer hours.
The salary is a gross annual figure in any currency; the result is in the same currency per hour. Hours per week means paid hours, so exclude an unpaid lunch break. Weeks per year is the number of paid weeks; 52 is standard because salaried leave is usually paid. Some payroll systems use 52.14 weeks (365 ÷ 7) or 52.18 to account for leap years; that changes the default result from $31.25 to about $31.17 an hour.
Treat this as a gross planning figure. Deductions, tax codes, benefit contributions, overtime rules, and local employment law all change what actually reaches your account, and they vary by jurisdiction and employer. Check the number against your payslip or contract before relying on it for a budget or a negotiation. On this page the figure rests entirely on annual salary, hours per week and weeks per year, so start there if the salary to hourly calculator returns something you did not expect.
Good to know: entering a monthly salary in the annual field is the most common error and produces a rate twelve times too low. Salaried staff who routinely work 50 hours are paid for 2,600 hours, not 2,080, so their true hourly rate is lower than the standard conversion suggests. When comparing with a contractor’s rate, remember the contractor covers their own leave, sick days, and employer taxes, so a matching hourly number is not a matching package.
Use the result as a gross planning estimate. Confirm payroll, overtime, tax, benefits, and employment-rule assumptions with your employer or the relevant authority.

Worked example
With Annual salary = 65000 $/year · Hours per week = 40 hours · Weeks per year = 52 weeks → $31.25 / hour (gross hourly equivalent). Change an input above and this example updates with your numbers.
Common questions
Divide the salary by the number of paid hours in a year. For a standard 40-hour week and 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so a $65,000 salary is $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 per hour before tax.
$65,000 a year is $31.25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. At 37.5 hours a week it is $33.33, and at 45 hours it is $27.78. Weekly gross pay is $1,250 and the monthly equivalent is $5,416.67.
Use 52 for a standard comparison; it is what most job adverts and payroll conversions assume. Some systems use 52.14 because 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14, which lowers the hourly result by about a quarter of a percent. Either is acceptable if you apply the same figure to both jobs you are comparing.
Enter paid hours only. If you are at work 8.5 hours but half an hour is an unpaid lunch, the paid week is 40 hours. Paid vacation stays inside the 52 weeks; unpaid leave should be removed from the weeks field, which raises the effective hourly rate.
Gross. The result is before income tax, social security or national insurance, pension contributions, and health premiums. Net hourly pay is typically 20–35% lower depending on country, income level, and deductions, so use a paycheck calculator for take-home figures.
